Perceptions of Self

Subject

Black Student Experience

Description

In this sample, 63% of students identified as a racial group first, an increase from the 50% in 1997. In the “other” category, one student had an answer involving race that was intertwined with academics: “Well deserving, high-achieving student that the school needed.” She clarified that she could have been successful anywhere, but that the school needed more high-achieving students of color: “So I consider myself just one of the students of color that agreed to come.” Another student identified as a student first because she dislikes labels and “doesn’t think of things like that.” The third identified as a student and an athlete mainly, but also as someone who wants to invoke change and provide a voice for those who are unhappy. All students except one said that black students are not homogeneous on some level, though several said that they were not homogeneous at all.
